Karl Douglas Albrecht, 85, of Bay City, our loving, considerate, tender, and compassionate husband and uncle passed away on the morning of Saturday, May 27, 2017. Doug was born in Detroit on February 16, 1931, the son of the late Karl August and Elsbeth (Balfour) Albrecht. He met the former Lauretta “Laurie” Brunett at a political party and they were united in marriage on July 27, 1975. Their forty-two years were blessed with countless memories. In 1997, Doug retired from The Bay City Times where he was a dedicated reporter for thirty-two years. He enjoyed checkers, and was even a grand master checker player. Doug was a loving man who will be deeply missed. Doug leaves to carry on his legacy, his wife, Laurie; brother, Gary (Ginney) Albrecht, along with many nieces and nephews. Private arrangements have been entrusted to Skorupski’s. Sat, May 27, 2017 at 10:37 AM Laurie Albrecht just called me to tell me Karl has passed. She said to stop mailings to him.Alan Millhone posted this on his facebook... May 27, 2017
Sad news for the Checker fraternity. I received a call an hour ago from Karl's Wife Laurie that KDA as most around the World knew him had passed. Karl Douglas Albrecht (on my right) was in his mid 70's (circa 2007) and one of the finest analysts before computer programs who ever graced this Earth.
Arrangements are incomplete.
" AT LAST MY TROPHIES I LAY DOWN "
He was a dear friend and today my heart is very heavy.
I received a phone call from Brian Hinkle Sunday evening telling me Karl
Albrecht of Bay City, MI passed away May 27, 2017; He explained Karl's wife
Laurie call him overtaken with grief and distraught. He didn't get a lot of
details except Karl didn't want a public funeral but would be cremated.
Brian informed me about a nice picture of Karl in his 20's on page 8 in Ryan's
Big League Checkers which you may access on Jake Kacher's Straight Checker
Library. http://checkersusa.com/books/ Actual
link to book: http://checkersusa.com/books/straight/Ryan_Big_League_Checkers.pdf you
may download the pdf file. Brian knows a lot of history and accomplishments
about Karl. Hopefully he or Bill Salot, Anthony Bishop, Alan Millhone, Ray
Shelly etc. will write up a respectable obituary for Karl, a “checker epitaph”
about this Master Player and what he gave back to ACF and our checker community.
I was never fortunate enough to meet or know Karl. I made sure his Life-Time
subscription was changed to Karl D. Albrecht c/o Carriage Home, 2394 Midland
Road, East 38 A, Bay City, MI 48706. I also sent him tournament postcards even
though I knew he could not attend. Laurie called Alan Millhone Dec. 16, 2016 who
called me about his final stage of 5 Parkinson, in a nursing home and wanted the
ACFB mailed there. Laurie Albrecht phone 989-686-8488. Brian Hinkle, 611 Peruque
